London, Sep 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Richard Edwards who had undergone a double hand transplant showed off to the world that he could make a ‘fist’. In his first public appearance he showed that he could move his hands and also curl his artificial fingers.
It ought to be mentioned that Richard had undergone the major surgery in Louisville, almost a week ago. The surgery took almost 18 hours and thus made Richard as the third double hand transplant recipient.
Richard is a 55-year-old chiropractor, who belongs to Edmond and he had majorly burnt his hands in a gruesome fire around 4 years back. The surgery is sure going to give him a second chance at having a normal life, which he was used to, before the drastic fire happened in 2006. After his hands were burnt badly, he suffered major depression and had trouble even doing simple tasks.
According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, after moving his hands, Richard said that, “I feel fantastic. I’m feeling very blessed and thankful for having a new pair of hands.”
The doctors are also amazed at the rapid progress made by Edwards, because they were able to use his own nerves in the donor hands.
