New Delhi, Sep 13 (IANS) Heavy rains in Delhi have forced people living in the low-lying areas to seek shelter on terraces and pavements. Thousands in the Yamuna Bazaar area of the capital are living on rooftops as the rain water has entered their homes.
For last three months, the area has been submerged and adding to their woes is the failure of drainage system.
“Around 25,000-30,000 have been affected in this area. We are living on terraces as the ground floor of each and every house is submerged in water. It’s difficult for us to get the things for daily use or even cook food,” said Ramesh Kumar, a resident of the area.
He said that around 15 shops have been closed due to the waterlogging in the area.
According to him, the sewage has been overflowing in the area for last three months and the municipal corporation, despite several visits to the area, have done nothing to drain out the water.
Similar is the situation in Nepali Park near the Inter-State Bus Terminal, where 25 families are forced to live on pavements.
“We have nowhere to go. The whole park is submerged in water due to heavy rains. The administration has provided us the tents but its not sufficient,” complained Nirmal, a resident.
Jeevan Lal, a member of the civil defence, said that the administration has provided tents but its less for the number of family residing in the area.
According to Lal, there are four-five tents with two-bed accommodation. Even the food available for the family in the area is less. “People should move to tents because if they remain outside they may suffer from various water borne diseases,” added Lal.
However, situation at the Nigambodh ghat is even worse where people have to attend the funerals in knee deep water.
Around 50 cremations took place Monday as compared to Sunday when no cremation could take place due to submersion of the ghat due to flood waters.
