Rahul Bose to run for cancer research in India
January 29th, 2010 - 5:08 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS) Actor and social activist Rahul Bose will run in a marathon in the capital Sunday to raise funds for cancer research in India.
The event — “Terry Fox - Marathon of Hope” — has been organised by the Indo-Canadian Cancer Research Foundation. The marathon will begin from Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram at 8:30 a.m.
“Around 1,500-2,000 runners are awaited for the 2010 edition (of the annual event), among which is actor, screenwriter, director, social activist, and rugby union player Rahul Bose,” the organisers said in a statement.
The statement quoted Bose as saying: “On Jan 31, I will do two things I love - run, and help erase some of the pain my fellow Indians feel everyday.”
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will also support the event as honorary guest, the statement said.
The Terry Fox Run in its previous marathons in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai has raised lakhs of rupees for various Indian cancer research organizations.
The annual event is named after Terry Fox, a young Canadian who died of the disease at the age of 22. He was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was 18.
His right leg was amputated above the knee. While in hospital, Terry was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to help raise funds for cancer research.
He commenced his “Marathon of Hope” and his fierce determination resulted in his running an average of 42 km a day for 143 days.
On Sep 1, 1980, Terry was forced to end his marathon due to the spread of cancer to his lungs. He died June 28, 1981.
