Chandigarh, April 14 (IANS) The harvest festival of Baisakhi was celebrated with fervour and enthusiasm in various parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Thursday.

Cultural programmes were organised by the youth, farmers and NGOs at various places. Men and women, dressed in colourful attire, performed bhangra and giddha (traditional Punjabi dances) to the beats of the dhol to celebrate the festival.

“We feel really proud on seeing the standing wheat crop in our fields. This is our hard work of many months. Today we have started the harvesting on the occasion of Baisakhi,” Rajveer Singh, a farmer near Punjab’s Zirakpur town, told IANS.

Young boys and girls, wearing traditional Punjabi dresses, also took out a procession through various parts of Chandigarh to mark the festival.

Wheat has started arriving in various mandis (markets) of Punjab and Haryana.

Punjab and Haryana contribute over 60 percent of the total national foodgrain kitty. In 2010, Punjab procured nearly 105 lakh tonnes of wheat and Haryana about 60 lakh tonnes.
