Beijing, May 27 (IANS) More and more pet animals kept by students at university hostels in China are now becoming stray as the pupils reportedly abandoned them after finishing their studies, says a media report.

Stray dogs can be seen in abundance in university campuses in southwest China’s Chongqing town, reported the Chongqing Evening News.

Many college students reportedly left their pets as their yearly graduation season ended.

Gu Jie, a staff member working in the Southwest University of Political Science and Law, who always buys food to feed the stray cats, said the number of homeless cats and dogs has greatly increased.

To feed a pet as a “symbol of love” by couples is very common on campuses, says a student of the university. Once the lovers part, the pets are abandoned and then reduced to strays.

In Sichuan International Studies University, a retired teacher has built a shelter in the school’s forest area for stray pets.

The director of the city’s Small Animal Protection Association has said to let pets stray was an act of disrespect for life. He firmly opposed students adopting animals in campuses.
