New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) Over 30 senior doctors including a few from the US and Canada have applied for the post of the director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). “Over 30 aspirants including some from the US and Canada are vying for the prestigious post,” said a senior AIIMS faculty member.
On May 24, the government had invited nominations from Indians, non-resident Indians and persons of Indian origin for the post. Thursday was the last day to submit applications.
“Nearly 10 doctors from our institute have applied. Applications from all parts of the country, like Chennai and Chandigarh, have reached AIIMS,” the doctor told IANS requesting anonymity.
Among others, acting director T. Dogra, head of the department of surgery M.C. Mishra, head of the urology department N.P. Gupta and senior professor in the department of pathology Manoj Singh are vying for the post.
The post fell vacant after P. Venugopal retired July 2.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has called the institute’s body meeting July 17 to constitute a committee that will select the director.
The nine-member committee, chaired by Ramadoss, includes Delhi University vice chancellor Deepak Pental and Health Secretary Naresh Dayal.
The selection process may take nearly a month before the committee comes out with the final choice.
AIIMS, considered the best public sector hospital and medical college in India, treats over 8,000 patients every day.
