Orissa woman gives birth to identical tripletsJune 2nd, 2008 - 6:53 pm ICT by IANS
Jajpur (Orissa), June 2 (IANS) A 24-year old woman in Orissa’s Jajpur district has given birth to identical triplets, a rarity that occurs once in three million births, a health official said here Monday. The woman, Santilata Mahalik, a resident of Kunida village, gave birth to three sons Sunday through a normal delivery in the community health centre at Sukinda, 140 km from here.
“The case was more exceptional as the lady had identical triplets where the three umbilical chords shared the same placental vessels,” gynecologist Rabi Narayan Senapati, who assisted the delivery told IANS.
Although the babies were born underweight they have no medical complications, he said.
In cases of multiple births, the mother and children carry a higher risk of medical complications but in this case the condition of both the mother and the babies was stable, he added.
“We have asked the family to shift the mother and the newborns to sheeshu bhavan, a government hospital for children, at Cuttack for further care,” he said.
