Online sports betting, poker could see emergence of new generation G
May 31st, 2010 - 6:38 pm ICT by ANISydney, May 31 (ANI): The bourgeoning online sports betting and poker industry will throw up a new generation of problem gamblers, warn experts.
A sneak peak Sports betting, which is increasingly taking place online, is growing at a much faster rate than other forms of gambling.
While the data from international industry experts Global Betting and Gaming Consultants reveal that Aussies are expected to spend 968 million dollars this year on online casino games, poker and bingo, this may just be the tip of the iceberg.
According to Sydney lawyer Jamie Nettleton, an expert on legal issues related to online gambling, the real money flowing offshore could be “20 times more”.
“Young people in particular are becoming acclimatised to the view that everything is an open market for gambling on,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Monash University’s gambling expert Charles Livingstone, as saying.
Internet betting exchange Betfair’s chief Andrew Twaits said: “If you are a punter and you like betting on the racing and footy and cricket and online poker, you’ll end up having one account, that’s my view. So really, there’s a race on among all the operators to offer this proverbial one-stop shop.” (ANI)
