New Delhi, May 22 (IANS) An irrepressible Justice Markandey Katju of the Supreme Court, known for his lighthearted remarks, Friday ended up reiterating himself when he said obeying one’s wife was the way to a happy life!
Having made a similar comment four days ago - “obey your wife and rule the world”, Justice Katju said it again, this time following an equally jovial complaint by a senior counsel that the court’s earlier observation on wives was creating problems for him.

“Your lordship made an observation about wives and all the radio and television channels are consistently showing it for the last two days or so,” said senior counsel Nagendra Rai after finishing his business with the court.

“After the court observation, wives are creating problems and raising their demands. It is because of this that I have to appear before you and keep working even during summer vacation!” said Rai, a former judge of the Patna High Court.

To this, Justice Katju replied: “Yes, you must listen to your wife and obey her”. He added: “That is the way to happy life”.

Even as Justice Katju said this, another judge on the bench, Justice Deepak Verma observed: “This (remark) again is going to be published.”

Justice Katju had made his obey-your-wife-and-rule-the-world remark May 18 while hearing a marital discord lawsuit.

“Bibi joh boltee hai woh suno (Listen to whatever your wife says), we all listen,” Justice Katju had observed. “Hum sab bhuktbhogi hain (we all have undergone the experience),” said the bench.

“If your wife wants you to see this side, see this side. If she wants you to see the other side, do obey her,” Justice Katju had said. “One who obeys his wife, rules the world,” he said.

Justice Katju is one apex court judge who does not allow court proceedings to become dull and tedious with his light and jovial remarks.

On May 18, when the apex court summer vacation began, Justice Katju advised all senior advocates to go to the hills instead of appearing before him. He added that during the vacations only junior lawyers should appear before the court.

“I don’t want to see the face of any senior (advocate) during the summer vacation, the vacation is only for juniors,” justice Katju remarked more than once.

“Go to the hills for the vacation. If you have earned enough money, go to the hills. But don’t come to this court,” Justice Katju jovially remarked.
