NRI hunts for errant son-in-law in Punjab
December 16th, 2010 - 12:11 am ICT by IANSChandigarh, Dec 15 (IANS) A non-resident Indian (NRI) from Canada said here Wednesday that he has travelled thousands of kilometres to Punjab to seek the arrest of his son-in-law from Ludhiana who betrayed his daughter in the name of marriage.Toronto-based Charan Singh said that Gurpreet Singh married his daughter Narinder Kaur, 28, a Canadian citizen, Oct 25, 2009.
After the marriage, Gurpreet started living with his wife in Canada but came back to India after he got Canadian citizenship, Charan Singh alleged.
“We had given Rs.10 lakh cash and gold worth Rs.20 lakh to Gurpreet’s family at the time of marriage. Then we took him to Canada and filed his case for permanent resident status there. But his family from Punjab kept demanding more money and dowry from us,” said Charan Singh, while talking to reporters here.
“After attaining Canadian citizenship, Gurpreet returned to India and he stopped answering my daughter’s calls. Then my daughter also came to Punjab but when she went to meet Gurpreet, his family members demanded Rs.50 lakh and a sports utility vehicle from her,” he alleged.
Following this, Narinder’s family lodged a police complaint in Ludhiana against Gurpreet and his parents Nov 18 this year.
Charan Singh, who retired from Punjab police, migrated to Canada around 10 years back.
“Police are taking this case very leniently. To escape from arrest, Gurpreet has fled to Canada. We suspect that Gurpreet had developed relations with another woman while living there. We appeal to Punjab Police to arrest his family members and put pressure on them to call him back,” said Mahinder Kaur, Charan Singh’s wife.
