Now, comics to dispel nuke fears
May 23rd, 2011 - 7:13 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, May 23 (IANS) Comics can be a potent tool. Or so believes the country’s top nuclear authority that will try to address apprehensions over the 9,900-MW Jaitapur nuclear power project through a series of comic books not only in Maharashtra but also Madhya Pradesh and Haryana.
The comics will be published in a humorous story format with colourful illustration and Marathi and Hindi scripts, an official of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) said Monday.
The first 100,000 copies of the proposed three editions have just been released for free distribution among Jaitapur villagers and others who are opposing the project for over six months, the official told IANS.
The Hindi version will be released in Madhya Pradesh and Haryana where the NPCIL is setting up mega-nuclear power projects soon.
Entitled “Ek Tha Budhiya: Kahani Ek Khushal Gaon Ki”, the comic series focuses on the benefits of nuclear power and at the same time dispels apprehensions and misconceptions about nuclear energy plants.
The comic takes the readers through an imaginative village of Jagdishpur which remains backward and undeveloped due to ignorance but undergoes a remarkable transformation after a nuclear power plant is constructed there.
As in Jaitapur, the story begins with villagers approaching the local headman and others expressing fears over the nuclear power plant coming up in the vicinity.
However, the village headman’s educated grandson dispels their fears and misconceptions about any adverse impact of the upcoming nuclear plant.
The official said the first lot of comic books has already been sent to Jaitapur for distribution in all schools, colleges and the local population, which has been opposing the Jaitapur nuclear power project.
