NGOs asked to make night shelters popular
January 10th, 2012 - 8:53 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 10 (IANS) The Delhi government has roped in NGOs to spread awareness about night shelters whose occupancy rate even in this harsh winter is far below the numbers they can accommodate.
The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has inducted the services of reputed NGOs to operate and maintain all 132 night shelters of Delhi, an official statement said Tuesday.
DUSIB is the nodal agency to provide shelter facilities for the homeless. Its night shelters have all necessary facilities. These include toilet, electricity, bedding, blankets and water.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has asked DUSIB to build more night shelters, which can now house 12,400 people. But current occupancy is some 5,100 people every night.
DUSIB has partnered with NGOs “and is endeavouring maximum mobilization and utilization by the homeless people”, the statement said.
