New drug ‘eases migraine with fewer side effects’
April 22nd, 2010 - 4:05 pm ICT by ANILondon, April 22 (ANI): A new drug could help thousands of migraine sufferers for whom existing treatments do not work, say scientists.
A lot of patients do not respond to the best current therapy, a class of drugs called triptans.
The drugs are also not recommended for people with some heart problems, reports the Daily Express.
However, trials suggest that a new drug, called telcagepant, could be used by those sufferers.
It interrupts chemicals in the brain that cause pain instead of causing constriction of the blood vessels.
Clinical trials were reviewed by Professor Lars Edvinsson, of University Hospital in Lund, Sweden, and Dr Mattias Linde, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.
They called telcagepant ‘promising’, but added: “Further investigation is warranted.”
