New biomarkers for predicting colon cancer spread identified
January 14th, 2010 - 3:24 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )Washington, Jan 14 (ANI): Chinese scientists are claiming to have discovered two proteins in the blood of colon cancer patients, which could be used as biomarkers for predicting the spread of the disease.
Maode Lai and his team compared proteins produced by primary or original tumour cells to those of metastasized cells from colon cancer patients to come up with their findings.
They identified two proteins that occurred at noticeably higher levels in the metastatic cells than in the primary cancer cells.
According to the researchers, these two proteins could serve as potential biomarkers in a blood test aimed at predicting the spread of colon cancer.
The scientists say this would allow for earlier intervention and treatment.
The study has appeared in ACS’ Journal of Proteome Research, a monthly publication. (ANI)
