Mexican climbers reach summit of Mt. Everest
May 21st, 2010 - 1:53 pm ICT by IANSMexico City, May 21 (IANS/EFE) Mexican mountaineers Ignacio Anaya and Eva Martinez have reached the summit of Mount Everest this week, officials said.
Anaya and Martinez, on an expedition to mark the bicentennial of Mexico’s independence, set foot on the peak of the 8,848 m peak Monday, the crowning achievement of the expedition that began March 29 and is expected to return to Mexico at the end of this month, the Sports Institute of Baja California state said Thursday.
Two other members of the expedition, Salvador Delgadillo and Gustavo Flores, did not make it to the top of Everest due to pneumonia and frostbite, officials said.
Earlier, Anaya had scaled the peaks of Aconcagua, Chimborazo, Elbrus and the highest mountains in Mexico such as the Pico de Orizaba and Iztaccihuatl.
In 2007, Eva Martinez, 43, made it to the top of Dhaulagiri, one of the world’s 14 highest peaks.
