October 22nd, 2008 - 8:48 pm ICT by IANS - Send to a friend:Beijing, Oct 22 (Xinhua) China Wednesday said more than 3,600 infants countrywide were receiving treatment at hospitals for kidney diseases after they were fed with melamine tainted baby milk and new cases were being admitted. The health ministry on its website said there was no new report of melamine-related death of infants after August and that the number of babies under treatment in hospitals dropped by one-third from a week ago.
Thousand of babies fell sick - and four died - after they were given baby food formula tainted with industrial chemical melamine used in making plastic, dyes and fertilisers.
The formula was marketed by the country’s dairy product giant Sanlu, but later other firms were also detected to have marketed baby formula tainted with the chemical.
Many countries have since banned import of Chinese dairy products.
The website said some 100 babies were reported to have been admitted to hospitals for kidney problems.
