June 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Researchers in Europe have finally identified the physical and psychological issues which occur as the testosterone level drops, which together are now known as the symptoms of male menopause. Hypogonadism, which is the medical term for male menopause, was previously not known to be a legitimate condition, however this recent research which appeared in the June 17 issue of ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’, proves that it is a very real part of some men’s lives.

Although the condition was proven to be legitimate, the study also showed that only a few men actually suffer from it’s symptoms. It was suggested by the research group at the University of Manchester in England that out of the 3,369 men who were studied, only about 2 percent of them actually had male menopause.

The study can help physicians decide who is at risk for hypogonadism, and which males could benefit from therapy to replace testosterone. According to one researcher, “Our findings have for the first time identified the key symptoms of late-onset hypogonadism and suggest that testosterone treatment may only be useful in a relatively small number of cases where androgen deficiency is suspected, since many candidate symptoms of classic hypogonadism were not associated with decreased testosterone levels in older men.”
