Low Carb Diets Beat Low Fat for Heart Health
August 4th, 2010 - 8:28 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonAug 4 (THAINDIAN NEWS) New research is suggesting that although a low fat diet may work just as well as a low carb one for weight loss, it may be better for the heart, since low carb can increase good cholesterol faster than low fat ones can.
The two year study, which included group counseling, showed that both diets can improve cholesterol, but the participants who were on the low carbohydrate diet has a much larger boost in the good cholesterol numbers than those who were on the low fat diets.
Studies which were done before show that those on low carb diets tend to do much better at losing weight in the first six months , but once the diet goes into longer periods of time, the results were mixed. These previous studies also showed that low carb diets help improve cholesterol.
This last study was one of the longest ever done to compare the two different diet methods. The average weight loss for both diets was only 15 pounds, however. The main difference was the HDL cholesterol, or good cholesterol. There was a 23 percent increase in those who were on the low carb diet and only a 12 percent increase in those on the low fat diet.
These findings, from the obese 307 participants, were published in the ‘Annals of Internal Medicine. The participants were obese, but none had problems with cholesterol or diabetes., and two-thirds of them were women.
