London, Dec 14 (IANS) A tiny bone fragment found on a desert island in the Pacific could finally prove that legendary woman aviator Amelia Earhart did not disappear after a plane crash but lived as a castaway there. The bone - thought to be part of a finger - was discovered on the tiny south Pacific atoll of Nikumaroro, The Sun reported Tuesday.
Pieces of a pocketknife, old American bottles and make-up from a woman’s compact were also found.
Experts now think Earhart, 41, who disappeared in 1937 on a round-the-world flight, was marooned there with her navigator Fred Noonan.
Scientists are hoping to obtain DNA from the bone to prove it came from Earhart.
Oscar-winner Hilary Swank played the role of the aviator in the 2009 Hollywood biopic “Amelia” directed by Indian-origin filmmaker Mira Nair.
