IPCA gets green signal from US for blood pressure drug

Mumbai, June 4 (IANS) Medical formulations production major Indian Pharmaceuticals Combine Association (IPCA) has received its first approval from US authorities for its blood pressure medicine. Announcing this in a regulatory intimation Wednesday, the company said the US Food and Drugs Administration (USFDA) has given the go-ahead for the manufacturing of Propranolol Hydrochloride tablets.
The total annual sales of this drug, which is also popular among those affected with migraine, last year, touched $24.1 million.
IPCA will manufacture the tablets in 12 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg and 80 mg formulations.
The company will manufacture this formulation for the US healthcare system from its unit in Piparia (Silvassa near Gujarat) with its own active pharmaceutical ingredient (API.)
The company now manufactures and markets its drugs to 100 countries. Its exports contributed to 50 percent of its total income of Rs.10.85 billion in 2007-08.
