London, Oct 29 (IANS) Adolf Hitler who hated being watched enjoyed bread and marmalade alongside coffee for breakfast, a media report said Friday.

He complained about his health and was prone to banging tables during meetings, according to documents released by the National Archives, Daily Mail reported on its website.

Details about the Nazi leader’s life come after an Austrian deserter gave a detailed description of the time Hitler spent at his retreat in Obersalzberg in the Bavarian Alps.

Describing his arrival between December 1943 and February 1944, prisoner of war SS Schutze Obernigg says: “Hitler was grey and bent, but wore a very satisfied expression.

“He is mild on personal contact but apt to bang tables and shout during conferences.”

Obernigg said he would get up at about 10 a.m. He would be seen by his barber, a “small, rather bald, stout” man who “looks like a circus clown” and “carries a very large brief case”. He would then go for a walk “in a fairly leisurely manner”.

He adds: “Hitler cannot bear to feel himself watched, and if he sees an SS man following him about he shouts at him ‘If you are frightened, go and guard yourself’.”

In consequence, guards were instructed to keep him in sight but to remain unobserved themselves. This order was, however, countermanded and reinforced several times.

In the afternoon, he would receive visitors, including his doctor, artists and other personalities.

Other characters in his entourage included his secretary, described as “about 24, brunette, attractive, slim”.

Hitler travelled with an escort of never less than three cars and “always sits next to the driver”, sometimes with his mistress Eva Braun in the back of the car.

He would work until 10 p.m., dine between 1 and 1.30 a.m. and sleep as late as 4 a.m.
