Chandigarh, Feb 23 (IANS) The Haryana government Saturday announced that villages that improve the male-female sex ratio would be given cash rewards. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the village that stood first in improving the sex ratio will get a cash reward of Rs.500,000 ($12,500) while the villages coming second and third would get Rs.300,000 ($7,500) and Rs.200,000 ($5,000) respectively.
Haryana has a low sex ratio of just around 800 females per 1,000 males.
In recent years, youth especially in the areas dominated by the Jat community, have been forced to get their brides from other states due to the prevailing sex ratio in the state.
