Chandigarh, April 5 (IANS) Haryana recorded child sex ratio of 830 girls for 1,000 boys in the 0-6 age group, according to the provisional population count released by the census department here Tuesday.

It showed a marginal rise compared to 2001 - 819 girls per 1000 boys - but remained way below the national average of 914-1000.

The neighbouring states did comparatively better than Haryana in terms of child sex ratio. In Punjab it is 846, Himachal Pradesh 906, Rajasthan 883, Uttar Pradesh 899, Uttrakhand 886 and Delhi 866.

The issue is a matter of concern for the Haryana government, said an official.

“Though the child sex ratio and overall sex ratio have improved in Haryana during the last decade, this growth is not enough. This is an issue of concern for us and we are discussing ways to improve it further,” Haryana census department director Neerja Shekar told reporters Tuesday.

She said she has presented the data to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and discussed the matter with him.

According to the census, Jhajjar district recorded the lowest child sex ratio at 774, followed by Mahendergarh (778), Rewari (784), Sonipat (790) and Ambala (807).

The overall sex ratio in Haryana is 877 as against 861 in 2001. Here also the state is behind its neighbouring state Punjab (893).

As per the provisional data, Haryana’s population is 25,353,081, recording a decade’s growth of around 19.90 percent.
