Harmony Silver Awards announced
October 5th, 2010 - 10:11 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, Oct 5 (IANS) Tina Ambani, the chairperson of Harmony Foundation, Tuesday announced the winners of the fourth edition of Harmony Silver Awards to honour people, including senior citizens, who are engaged in various social projects.
To be honoured at an event Wednesday, 10 Silvers - Harmony’s term for the elderly - will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs.51,000 each and a citation.
“The winners will astound you with their commitment to their chosen cause,” Ambani said here.
“This year, to amp up the spotlight on the awards and their intrinsic message of ageing, we are introducing a new competition section titled ‘Celebrate Age’ at the 12th Mumbai Film Festival in collaboration with Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI),” she added.
The foundation, that also has a magazine by the same name, had shortlisted 28 candidates for the jury comprising of veteran film-maker Shyam Benegal, Prasar Bharati chairperson Mrinal Pande, advertising icon Piyush Pandey, United World Colleges’ director Smita Parekh and MD and CEO of ICICI Bank Chanda Kochhar
The eldest amongst those who will be honoured is 103-year-old mathematics professor Annaswamy Rao from Ahmedabad who has made the subject much easier for those who suffered from the phobia.
The youngest awardee, Yogeshwar Kumar from New Delhi, is 59 years old. Instrumental in setting up more than 15 small hydroelectric power stations in villages across India by utilizing streams and irrigation channels, Kumar has literally lit up several villages of North India.
The other awardees are V. Mani, 73, from Bengaluru, Ram Sanehi, 80, from Morena in Madhya Pradesh, Sekhar Raghavan, 62, from Chennai, Dilip Velaskar, 69, from Mumbai, Sudarshan Mitter, 75, from Faridabad, P. Gopinath, 65, from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, A. Sharfudeen, 67, from Chennai and Bharat Singh Sisodia, 65, from Udaipur in Rajasthan.
