Excavations unearth Ilkhanid-era wall near Tehran
January 20th, 2009 - 6:09 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment ) Tehran, January 20 (ANI): Excavations on the Yengeh-Emam Tepe in the Savoj-Bolagh region, west of Tehran, have unearthed ruins of an Ilkhanid-era wall.
It is not clear yet what kind of building the wall belongs to, the Tehran Times quoted Valiollah Dehqan-Sanich, the director of the archaeological team working at the site, as telling the Persian service of CHN.
He hopes that the team would discover the use of the structure during the season of excavation currently underway at the site.
With a view to studying various historical periods on the mound, the excavation was started on August 8, 2008.
Archaeologists believe that the wall might be a trace of a historical town in Savoj-Bolagh because of the nearby historical caravanserai, and the shrine of Imamzadeh Yengeh-Emam.
Dehqan-Sanich revealed that necessary funding has been provided to prevent the smuggling of artefacts from the site.
The Ilkhanids (12561353), a Mongol dynasty that ruled in Iran, was founded by Hulegu, a grandson of Genghis Khan. (ANI)
