June 25, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On Thursday, the noted talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw talked at length on the subject of cyberbullying at an event that was held at the Capitol Hill. A House Education subcommittee hearing was going on there and he spoke in detail about the dangers and various implications of kids and teenagers using social networking and internet like never before. He informed the subcommittee that kids who are bullied online have a tendency to end their lives much more compared with others.
The talk show host also added that he gets a huge number of letters on his show from kids of various ages. The kids get baffled and confused when they get bullied online, he said. The percentage of kids getting bullied online is rising alarmingly. What is more worrisome is the fact that not only older people and sick minded pedophiles, but a section of teenagers are also getting involved in cyberbullying. There are a section of children who do not feel comfortable talking to their parents about cyberbullying while the girls in particular feel more embarrassed and ashamed to talk about it and they feel hesitant to seek the help of their parents or even educators.
Dr. Phil McGraw said the teachers need to become more aware about this menace and they can also help the students to cope with it. As the kids have become more comfortable with technology and computers than previous generation kids, they can come across stuff and people online they are not capable of dealing with. He said that the parents need to learn more about this menace to safeguard the future of their children.
