May 3rd, 2009 - 2:40 pm ICT by IANS Tell a Friend -

Bharatiya Janata Party Ranchi, May 3 (IANS) Narendra Dhoni, elder brother of Indian cricket skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is busy repairing hand pumps here this summer to help people overcome the prevailing water crisis.
The water level has fallen from the earlier around 15 feet to 40 feet in Jharkhand due to the blistering heat. And adding to the woes of the people, majority of hand pumps are no longer functional as a result in the state capital Ranchi.

The residents here have to stand in long queues for water from the hand pumps and water tankers.

Braving the scorching sun, Narendra Dhoni was seen busy repairing hand pumps. In Ranchi, the temperature soared to 43 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

“I am comfortable doing a plumber’s work. It is our traditional work. My father was a pump operator. I am repairing hand pumps to satisfy the thirst of the people,” said Narendra, who repaired three hand pumps in Hatia locality of Ranchi on Saturday.

Aneeta Devi, a resident of Hatia locality, said: “Narendra’s move is a lesson for the government. He is a brother of the Indian cricket captain and he is repairing hand pumps to help the residents. We cannot forget his gesture.”

Last month, Narendra joined and campaigned for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here. His move is seen as an attempt to woo the voters for the upcoming assembly elections.
