Chinese officials labour in field to get feel of farming
May 6th, 2011 - 9:31 am ICT by IANSBeijing, May 6 (IANS) To make them empathise with the farmer and acquaint them with the challenges of his life, officials in a municipality of China are being made to work on farms for a month every year.
All officials in Nan’an district, Chongqing municipality, are being required to farm and their farmwork will be part of their annual performance evaluation, China Daily reported.
Seventythree officials of the town lease land from local farmers and plant peaches, with each official paying 1,000 yuan for the 66.7 square metres of land which is in his or her charge.
Changshengqiao town was the first to push this new rule.
Officials will do the farming on weekends to prevent it from interfering with their daily work.
Qian Yuhang, vice-head of the department of the CPC committee of Nan’an district, said that officials are expected to learn more about the ordinary farmer’s life and to get on well with farmers.
Moreover, farmers can also raise their income through land leases.
