Chinas .cn Internet domain surpasses global .netJune 19th, 2008 - 5:49 pm ICT by ANI
New Delhi, June 19 (ANI): Proof that Internet use in China is rapidly rising can be found in the fact that registrations for Internet addresses ending in .cn have surpassed those for the global .net.
Experts at VeriSign Inc., which runs the “.net” databases and other core directories for helping computers find websites and route e-mail, say that .cn had overtaken .net sometime in the first quarter of this year.
According to VeriSigns study, .cn registrations grew 23 per cent from the previous quarter, and had become thrice the number of registrations in the same period last year.
The organization pegged .cn registrations at 11.8 million, and .net at 11.6 million as of May.
VeriSigns report comes as China reported that the number of Internet users had soared to 221 million, reports the China Daily.
The study found growth in other country names as well, including Poland’s .pl, Spain’s .es, Russia’s .ru and France’s .fr. (ANI)
