China focuses on quality of life in family planning
July 12th, 2011 - 9:42 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, July 12 (IANS) China’s family planning policy will now focus on population management so as to improve the quality of life, an official said.
Li Bin, minister of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, spoke about this Monday at an event in Tianjin to mark World Population Day.
Vice minister Zhao Baige told China Daily that the “ongoing shift is significant and revolutionary”.
“We have to innovate in both our population strategy and its implementation” to tackle emerging problems, she said.
Zhao said the shift will see the country better develop its human resources.
China is the world’s most populous country with a population of 1.3 billion.
Nobuko Horibe, a senior UN official, said the policy shift “is in line with China’s changing demographics and national interest. I think China is now ready for the shift”.
“Everyone has the right to live and to realize their potential. It is the government’s responsibility to provide the people with suitable conditions,” Horibe was quoted as saying.
