Child marriage prevented in Haryana
November 30th, 2010 - 11:26 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Nov 30 (IANS) Timely action by district officials and the Haryana Police prevented a 15-year-old girl from being forcibly married off at a village in Sirsa district, officials said Tuesday.
The action followed after the District Child Marriage Prevention Officer (DCMPO) Sadhna Mittal received information that a minor girl, Pushpa, of village Rupana Darba would Dec 1 be married to Pawan, son of Manihar Lal of Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district.
Acting on the information, she immediately informed the Sirsa superintendent of police.
Police immediately responded to the complaint and sent a police team consisting of Assistant Sub-Inspector Sunita Devi and
Sub-Inspector Arun Bishnoi along with Mittal to the village.
The team demanded proof of the girl being an adult which her family failed to produce. The team warned the girl’s father, Sant Lal, about the illegality of the child marriage and the provision of punishment under the Child Marriage Act.
Following this, Sant Lal and other villagers gave a written assurance to postpone the marriage till the girl attained marriageable age.
