Melbourne, July 22 (ANI): Bosnian Muslims are celebrating in the streets of Sarajevo following news of the arrest of war criminal Radovan Karadzic, the wartime leader of the Bosnian Serbs.

Bosnian Muslims can be seen beeping their car horns in the city and crowds are singing and chanting.

Karadzic, one of the most wanted men in the world, was arrested on Monday after a 13-year manhunt.

Karadzic is accused of planning massive civilian massacres, described by the United Nations war crimes tribunal as scenes from hell, written on the darkest pages of human history.

Karadzic and his former military commander, Ratko Mladic, had been on the run from the International Criminal Tribunal.

They both face genocide charges over the 1995 massacre of 8000 Muslims in Srebrenica, the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II.

Karadzic’’s 11 charges included one of genocide and one of complicity in relation to the Srebrenica massacre of Bosnian-Muslim men, reported.

Karadzic’’s capture comes as the European Union increases pressure on non-member countries to hand over suspects to the international tribunal.

The United States congratulated the Government of Serbia on the capture of Karadzic, calling his arrest a tribute to the victims of atrocities there.

We congratulate the Government of Serbia, and thank the people who conducted this operation for their professionalism and courage,” a White House statement said. (ANI)
