Bahujan Samaj Party Meerut (Uttar Pradesh), March 25 (IANS) In the headlines some years ago for announcing a bounty of Rs.51 crore on the head of a Danish cartoonist for drawing a blasphemous cartoon of Prophet Mohammad, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator Haji Yaqoob Quraishi again made waves at his daughter’s wedding, where he gave away fridges and bikes to the bride-groom’s family.

Besides a high-end Audi car, Quraishi gave away 51 motor-bikes and 51 refrigerators together with jewellery worth Rs.1 crore to the bride-groom’s family.

“The bikes and refrigerators are meant for the close relatives of the bridegroom, who gets the Audi as his gift,” Quraishi told reporters Friday.

Asked whether the lavish gesture was in conformity with the tenets of Islam , which denounces extravagance in weddings, he shot back: “Islam does not bar expression of happiness, and what I have done is not dowry.”

Quraishi runs a multi-crore meat processing unit in Meerut, which also exports meat to certain Middle East countries.
