Bangladeshi mother meets her separated conjoined twins in Australia
July 11th, 2010 - 12:38 pm ICT by IANSDhaka, July 11 (IANS) A poor Bangladeshi couple’s conjoined twins, who were separated after a marathon surgery in Australia over six months ago, got to meet their mother who has travelled to Melbourne to see them.
The mother, Lovely Mallik, met her three-and-a-half-year-old girls, Trishna and Krishna, who are under the care of their Australian guardian Moira Kelly. However, the twins’ father Kartik Mallik, a poor jute mill worker in southern Khulna district, could not afford the travel cost.
Lovely’s visa and other fees were paid by Atom Rahman, an expatriate Bangladeshi who lives in Australia, The Daily Star reported Sunday.
Lovely gave birth to conjoined twins, who the media dubbed “miracle twins” Dec 22 in 2006.
They were sent to the Children’s Home in Dhaka run by the Missionaries of Charity.
The children were taken to Australia Dec 15 in 2007 for surgical operation.
Their conjoined heads were separated after a marathon surgical operation Nov 16 in 2009 in the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne with assistance of the Children First Foundation, an international voluntary organisation.
