Baba Amte’s widow dies
July 9th, 2011 - 8:16 pm ICT by IANSChandrapur (Maharashtra), July 9 (IANS) Sadhna Amte, social worker and widow of the legendary messiah of lepers Baba Amte, passed away here Saturday, an official of their NGO said. She was 86.
Sadhna Amte had been suffering from a kidney problem for the past nearly four months and breathed her last around 5 p.m. Saturday, said Sudhakar Kadu, a trustee of Anandwan, the organisation founded by the Amtes to help victims of leprosy in the backward Chandrapur district of eastern Maharashtra.
Revered as Sadhnatai among the people, she is survived by her sons Vikas and Prakash, both medicos, and two adopted daughters, Renuka and Bijlee.
Her husband Baba Amte and their younger son, Prakash, were awarded the prestigious Magsaysay Awards in the past.
Baba Amte passed away in 2008.
