A Chennai restaurant’s unique Saturday night dinner

Chennai, May 25 (IANS) A Chennai restaurant has hit upon the idea of offering its customers the experience of dining in pitch dark, save for a lit candle, with gentle music playing in the background — all in an attempt to suppress the sense of sight and to heighten the guest’s senses of taste, touch and sound.

“The concept is new here though it is widely prevalent in other parts of the world. I have seen this in a couple of restaurants overseas and wondered why we should not do it here,” Nimrat Pahwa, chef at ‘On the Rocks’ restaurant at the Sheraton Park Hotel and Towers here told IANS.

Elaborating on the special Saturday night setting at the restaurant, she said: “There will be minimal lights. There will be a candle on the table. Our attendants will be there to assist the guests if they need.”

Once the guests are seated at their tables, they would be blindfolded and food would be served.

“The food would be bite sized and the attendants would tell the guests where the spoon and fork are kept. The food will not be hard and there may not be a need to use the knife,” she said.

According to her there will be more elements, flavours and texture on the plate for the guests to enjoy.

On Saturday night, the guests would be offered three food options - vegetarian, sea food and tenderloin food.

The meal would start with a soup, appetizers and sorbet followed by the main course and ends with desert.

One of the specialities of the On the Rocks restaurants is the provision of volcanic stone slabs heated up to 400 degrees centigrade right on your table so that you can stone grill your favourite dish and have it piping hot!

However, the volcanic stone would be absent on Saturday to avoid any untoward incident.

“The fun would be manifold if the guests come in a group, as one would not know to whom they are talking or responding to,” she said.

According to her, the restaurant staff did a dry run earlier.

“Though the ‘dine in the dark’ experience is only for tomorrow (Saturday), based on the feed back we plan to have it regularly,” Pahwa said.
