Its little known but you better know today. Internationally, the day is regarded as interesting day where people poke fun in talking. The hype is that if you talk like a pirate, its fun. Talk like a pirate day came to be through a typical and simple accident. Based on the context of the word “arr” ‘talk like a pirate’ came to be. The day is famed as a pop-culture that came about by accident.

The day was founded by two Oregon men named Mark Summers and John Baur - aka Cap’n Slappy and Ol’ Chumbucket. Both started speaking pirate one day in 1995 while playing racquetball. None of the the two knows who uttered the first “arrrrrrr!” or why, but it stuck. Since then, they have remained optimistic and cultured that pirate-speak deserved its own holiday.

The first year of the day was neither hyped nor popular; people just joked and dressed like pirates. The subsequent seven years saw Summers, Baur and another friend being the only one celebrating, and they were so nonchalant about it that Summers and Baur had to be reminded of the date by the other friend. However, the following years starting from 2002 things changed. The contacted Dave Barry after they came across his email. Barry is a reputed humorist who is syndicated. They offered him to become the official spokesman for Talk like a Pirate Day. Barry liked it and he mentioned the event in a column.

This offset ‘Talk like a Pirate Day’ as a bona fide international holiday, with 2008 observances scheduled in Iceland, Iraq, Antarctica and other locales.
