Bhikhiwind (Amritsar), June 25 (ANI): The Pakistan’s Supreme Court’s rejection of Indian national Sarabjit Singh’s review petition seeking mercy from death penalty evoked protests on Thursday at Bhikwind village, the native place of Sarabjit in Punjab.
Sarabjit is facing gallows in Lahore jail after being accused of being an Indian spy and for being involved in bomb blasts in Pakistan. He has been languishing in Pakistan jails for 19 years.
Protesters raised slogans against Abdul Hameed Rana, the lawyer of Sarbjit Singh and Pakistan and said Sarbjit Singh is innocent and just crossed over to Pakistan in an inebriated condition.
Dalbir Kaur, Sarabjit’s sister said that enough proof had been sent to Pakistan, which proved that the person, who was to be awarded death sentence was Manjit Singh and not Sarbjit Singh.
Dalbir Kaur said that Human Rights Activist Ansar Burney will file a fresh mercy petition on Thursday to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on behalf of Sarabjit Singh alias Manjit Singh.
Family of Sarbjit Singh and residents of Bhikhiwind also pleaded to the President of Pakistan to grant clemency to Sarbjit Singh on humanitarian grounds, as he had already spent 19 years in jails without committing any crime.
Meanwhile, talking to ANI from Pakistan Rana said that now he was Additional Advocate General of Punjab that’s why he could not appear in the court and he was no more Sarbjit’s advocate on official record.
Reliable sources claimed that Abdul Hameed Rana was the advocate who got into an agreement with Sital Kaler of South Asian Human Rights Group of Canada for contesting four cases in the Supreme Court of Pakistan against Manjit Singh alias Sarabjit Singh.
As per the agreement, the copy procured by ANI, Rana has received Rs. 100,000 and remaining fee will be charged after the conclusion of the case. When contacted in Canada, Kaler informed that as per the agreement it was the duty of Rana to apper in the court in favour of Sarbjit Singh. He said that he would take strong action against Abdul Hameed Rana for violating the agreement. However, he said, their organization would do its best effort to save Sarbjit. (ANI)
