Oz skipper Haddin happy to have pacers Lee, Watson backMay 6th, 2009 - 6:55 pm ICT by ANI
Dubai, May 6 (ANI): Australia’s stand-in captain for the lone twenty20 clash with Pakistan here, Brad Haddin, has said that the sight of Brett Lee tearing in with the new ball will be heartening regardless of how he fares in his comeback game.
Haddin, who will lead Australia for the second time in his career in the absence of resting captain Ricky Ponting and vice-captain Michael Clarke, said the return of Lee and Shane Watson would be a welcome milestone.
“It’s just good for them to get out and play again, those guys have had extended breaks from international cricket and it’s just good to get out there and play some cricket. The results on how they bowl or whatever is irrelevant,” Fox Sports quoted Haddin, as saying.
“I know Lee, after his long lay-off, is pretty keen to get back playing some cricket. He had a good hit-out over the last couple of days and got some good pace going in (practice in) Abu Dhabi. He’s champing at the bit and he’ll be ready to go to take the new ball,” Haddin added.
The match will provide Lee and Watson with an important test as they prepare for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup. Both were named in Australia’s 15-man squad on Tuesday, although Watson has justified his selection on batting form alone.
Haddin said it was difficult to predict how the match would unfold on the Dubai pitch.
Haddin said Thursday night’s match against Pakistan would have little bearing on the team’s preparation for the upcoming World Twenty20.
“I don’t think it’s that important to do with our preparation. After this game we’ve got a couple weeks to freshen up, we’ve been on the road a long time now, so we’ve got the opportunity now to have a break. I think we just take Thursday night for what it is,” Haddin said. (ANI)
