Nagaland expresses confidence of winning medal in National Sepak Takraw Tournament
January 2nd, 2010 - 8:53 pm ICT by ANIKohima, Jan 2 (ANI): The Nagaland team which bagged two silver and a bronze medals in the 19th National Sepak Takraw Tournament expressed confidence to improve its tally and win a Gold medal in the upcoming 2010 Championship.
Sepak Takraw, a game of far eastern origin, is a mixture of martial arts, volleyball and football. Players can use only their feet, head or chest to touch the ball in the game.
The Nagaland Sepak Takraw team is practicing hard for the 20th Senior National Sepak Takraw Championship, which is scheduled to be held in Delhi later this month.
The hopes of the 31-member Nagaland team are high and the team coaches are confident of displaying a better performance.
One of the men’s team members Pusato said that the team is undergoing a rigorous training with the aim of winning a gold medal in the upcoming tournament.
Speaking to ANI, team’s coach Homshe Khrieo said: “Many states are coming prepared well and especially it will be tough for men’s team there, so according to that we have prepared well, I hope our boys and girls can do well.”
With teams from 24 states participating, the national tournament will not be a cakewalk for anyone.
The top eight teams will qualify for the 34th National Games to be held later in the year in Jharkhand.
The Nagaland team which has participated in some of the international invitation tournament in Bangkok and Malaysia has registered outstanding performance and also won many medals.
“The Nagaland Government and Sports Department have been very supportive. Our sports department is providing all financial assistance and our State Government is giving financial assistance to the players those who participate and excel in National and International levels,” Khrieo added. (ANI)
