Rampur (Himachal Pradesh), Nov. 11 (ANI): The Himachal Pradesh Government has undertaken an initiative to conserve ‘Chamurthi’, one of four recognised indigenous horse breeds in India.
‘Chamurthi’, or snow horse, is an endangered species, which has prompted the government to initiate a preservation project.
“The breed of ‘Chamurthi’ horse is one of the most popular breeds of horses in the world. The Himachal Pradesh government, with the help of central government, took an initiative to preserve this endangered species of horse, opened a horse exhibition farm at Lari in Lahaul-Spiti where we are engaged in the preservation and production of this species,” said Ramesh Kumar, Animal Husbandry Expert.
Chamurthi horses are very strong, sure-footed, rarely fall sick, and have great endurance.
Residents believe that they are one of the best breeds of snow horses.
“These horses are very active, healthy and are very much efficient for the hilly areas. These horses are effective in hilly areas as well. The main specialty of these horses is that they are excellent riding ponies,” said Akash Negi, a horse owner from Kinnaur District.
The ‘Chamurthi’ horse traces its origin to the Tibet region. In India, ‘Chamurthis’ are found in the villages of Himachal Pradesh bordering China. (ANI)
