Hafeez Saeed not under arrest, in safe custody, say sources
September 24th, 2009 - 12:58 am ICT by ANIFrankfurt (Germany), Sept. 23 (ANI):Highly placed government sources have specific inputs that Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafeez Saeed is not under house arrest in Lahore, but is living in protective custody in that city. The JuD chief, who is seen by New Delhi as themastermind of 26/11, Mumbai attackswas arrested earlier this week by authorities in Pakistan, but was not booked for the Mumbai attacks.India sees Saeed’s arrest as a face saving excercise and sources believe that if Lashkar chief is not punished for the 26/11 Mumbai attack, it will have a negative impact on bilaterial relations and ensure limited dialogue.India has alreadyhanded over around half a dozendossiers to Pakistan which also contained appropriate evidence against Saeed but Islamabad have asked New Delhi for more evidence and have consistently maintained that the evidence provided by India is weak.It is not only India but US is also exerting pressure on Pakistan to act against Saeed recently.
US envoy to India Timothy Roamer had earlier urged Pakistan to Punish Saeed.Sources also told ANI that External Affairs Minister S M Krishna will also be raising this issue during his interaction with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.National Security Adviser M. K. Narayanan is also expected to take up the issue during his meeting with his US counterpart at Pittsburg tommorow.(ANI)
