Jalpaiguri (West Bengal), Sep 4 (ANI): An elephant under the care of the Gorumara National Park near West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district gave birth to a female calf.
The calf was born on Friday under the supervision of the sanctuary’s veterinarian.
The forest rangers and game wardens at the Gorumara National Park are delighted to watch the gentle mother Amon and the tiny cute calf.
Range (South) Officer of the Gorumara National Park Bimal Debnath said both the mother and its offspring are healthy.
“Actually, we have 13 captive elephants in our National Park. Among those, Surya is a male tusker and Amon is an adult female, they crossed over 23 months before. And now gave birth to a female calf today at 1.25 a.m. We are happy seeing both the captive elephant today,” said Debnath.
The two mahouts of Amon were also appreciated for their efforts and dedication as for looking after it for the past two years. The healthy delivery of the calf has been attributed to their care.
Both the elephant and calf are in good health. Apart from supplementary food, the mother elephant, Amon is also administered required medicines by the veterinarians.
At present there are 13 captive elephants in the Gorumara National Park that are used to carry out a number of tasks including taking around tourists. (ANI)
