New Delhi, Sep 22 (ANI): The Congress party expressed its ‘deep concern’ on Wednesday over complaints regarding the preparations of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) here.

“No doubt civil society and the political class are deeply concerned. Nation’s prestige is at stake. Every possible sinew will be strained to ensure that we come out with flying colours in this test of India’s ability to hold the games,” said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi here today.

The Congress, however, assured that the government would make every possible effort to hold the Games successfully.

Earlier, about 27 labourers were injured after an under-construction foot overbridge collapsed near the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy termed the incident as a ‘minor matter’.

The incident was a blow to the CWG organizers, who are already caught amid charges of corruption and mismanagement.

On Tuesday, the Chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Mike Hooper, commenting on the state of cleanliness at the Games Village said the conditions were “filthy”.

India is expecting about two million tourists in New Delhi for the Games, as well as about 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states.

The Commonwealth Games 2010 will be held from 3 to 14 October in New Delhi. (ANI)
