New Delhi, July 14 (ANI): The recent mishaps on under construction site of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in South Delhi has created doubts in daily commuters’ minds about its safety.
A part of an overhead bridge, which was under construction, crumbled on Sunday, killing six persons and injury many other seriously. Besides, in another incident on the following day crane pressed into service toppled over while lifting a heavy launcher, and left five workers as injured on Monday.
The two incidents have created a sense of fear among many daily commuters of the Metro.
“Earlier when we used to travel in Metro, we used to feel quite safe and comfortable and it is even convenient. But after the recent accidents we have started developing fear whether we will reach safely while travelling in Metro or not. So government should see that safe construction work is done so that the commuters feel safe while travelling,” said Sonali Sharma, a commuter.
There is a feeling among a section of commuters that such accidents have happened because the ongoing construction work is being done in a hurry due to the upcoming Commonwealth Games to be held in the city in 2010.
“We are not feeling safe at all. Within one year we have witnessed three accidents on metro sites. Commonwealth Games are nearing and so these Metro people are proceeding with the construction work in hurry in order to finish the work as soon as possible. Due to their carelessness we can see the damage and if they go on working like this, then we might have to witness more incidents in future,” said Harshit Pandey, another commuter.
The accident on Sunday had caused flooding in the area after a pillar fell on the main lines of filtered water.
E. Sreedharan, Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) resigned over the incidents but later withdrew his resignation on Monday after Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit refused to accept it. (ANI)
