Michidui village (North Cachar Hills) (Assam), July 8 (ANI): Attacks on poor villagers in North Cachar Hills district in Assam have not stopped despite appeals.

Militant activities have taken a heavy toll in North Cachar Hills of Assam.

Suspected cadres of Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel), also known as Black Widow, recently killed 12 persons including eight children on June 16 at Michidui village, about 25 kilometres from Haflong, the district headquarters.

Moreover, they also set over 20 houses on fire in the village.

“They came at night and burnt the village. They even killed 15 persons,” said.

“They came around 11:30 in the night and attacked our village. They burnt 27 houses and killed 15 persons including eight children,” said a villager in NC Hills of Assam.

Several civil organizations have condemned these incidents and appealed to militant groups to stop violence and allow people to live in peace.

“We would like to appeal to the Central Government to bring a change in NC hills and keep the situation under control. What we want is peace to return in the region like the earlier days. Everyone in NC hills also wants peace and this is what we are appealing for,” Dibyajyoti Saikia, General Secretary Samanwita Yuva Tirtha of Assam Sattra Mahasabha.

Meanwhile, the Assam Government has decided to temporarily relocate residents of about 50 villages in NC hills district to nine identified clusters of Dimasa and Zeme Naga villages.

About 10,000 villagers will be shifted to the identified cluster locations, to facilitate a full-scale counter-insurgency operation in the district.

Militant attacks on these villages have claimed over 47 lives. The militants have also set ablaze about 500 houses, school buildings and business establishments in the recent past.

About 6,500 people have presently taken shelter in makeshift relief camps. (ANI)
