Button set to play second fiddle to title hopeful Hamilton at McLaren
October 26th, 2010 - 4:39 pm ICT by ANILondon, Oct. 26 (ANI): Formula One champion Jenson Button is set to take on the number two driver’s role he despises after McLaren hinted they are ready to throw their weight behind Lewis Hamilton’s title bid.
Button has voiced disagreement with team orders ever since the Hockenheim fiasco, when Ferrari told Felipe Massa to give way to Fernando Alonso.
But after finishing 12th in the sodden Korea Grand Prix, McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said he will have to consider the role of Button with Hamilton the only real contender for the world championship.
“We will have to think about that [Button's role]. We had a disappointing day with Jenson, but Lewis is still very much in the hunt,” the Daily Express quoted Button, as saying.
He added: “Mathematically it is not impossible for Jenson, but it looks very difficult for him. We will talk about that before the next race in Brazil.”
Button is 42 points adrift of championship leader Fernando Alonso while Hamilton, who finished second on Sunday, is only 21 points behind. (ANI)
