World Future Energy Summit opens in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, Jan 17 (IANS/WAM) The fourth World Future Energy Summit (WFES) kicked off Monday here to discuss ways to promote the use of clean energy for sustainable growth. Leaders and industry experts from around the world gathered in the capital of the United Arab Emirates for the annual summit, hosted by Abu Dhabi-based power company Masdar.
Earlier, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces, inaugurated the WFES 2011, a global platform for open dialogue between government and industry leaders, international policy makers, and experts from across the sector.
The summit runs until Jan 20 at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed said: “Under the visionary leadership and guidance of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the UAE, the nation is placing a high priority on sustainable development as a key driver in improving the lives and economic stability for future generations.”
Government and industry leaders and high-ranking private and public sector officials attended the opening ceremony.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Portugese Prime Minister Jose Socrates Carvalho Pinto de Sousa and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were among the top leaders who were present on the occasion.
More than 25,000 delegates are participating in the event that is expected to discuss renewable and future energy solutions, innovations, investments, policy and vision.
