Widespread rain in northwest India next week
August 13th, 2011 - 12:20 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS) There will be widespread rain and thundershowers over northwest India next week, the Ministry of Earth Sciences said Friday and added that the intensity of rain will increase during second half of the week.
In a press release, the ministry said fairly widespread rainfall would occur along the west coast, east and northeastern parts of the country during the week.
However, over central India and Gujarat, rain will decrease in latter part of the next week.
“Rainfall would remain subdued over interior Maharashtra and southeast Peninsula. The monsoon trough would remain in its near normal position during first half of the week and shift gradually towards north of its normal position during second half leading to increase in the rainfall activity along the foothills of Himalayas,” it said.
The release said that likely southward shift of the trough may lead to increase in monsoon activity over central India.
The cumulative rainfall during this year’s monsoon up to Aug 10 has been four percent below the Long Period Average.
