Wet Raksha Bandhan in Delhi, more rains Wednesday (Lead)
August 24th, 2010 - 9:29 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) Heavy rains in the morning and intermittent downpour later in the day caused water logging at many places in Delhi Tuesday, leading to traffic jams. Many Delhiites had a tough time navigating through flooded roads as they travelled to spend time with relatives on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
The city recorded 6.3 mm rainfall from 8.15 a.m. to 5.15 p.m and the weatherman said the wet spell would continue for the next couple of days.
“The skies will be generally cloudy with one or two spells rain and heavy rains in few pockets of the city in the next 24 hours,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
The maximum temperature Tuesday was two notches below the average at 31.7 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature was 25.6 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year.
The humidity levels were on the higher side with the maximum recorded at 94 percent and the minimum at 77 percent.
“More rains are expected tomorrow (Wednesday) and the next couple of days and the skies will be cloudy with one or two spells of drizzle and heavy rains in a few pockets of the city,” the weatherman informed.
The maximum temperature Wednesday would hover around 32 degrees Celsius, a Met official said.
The heavy rains Tuesday morning left many roads flooded. Traffic jams were reported from Ring Road, Qutub Minar metro station to Gurgaon stretch of Mehrauli-Gurgaon road, Rajghat, Mori Gate, Lajpat Nagar, Ashram, Vikas Marg and Badarpur.
The capital till 8.30 a.m. Tuesday had received nearly 686 mm rain, almost 40 percent above the average. In August, 444 mm of rain has been recorded so far - the highest for the month in 10 years.
